TracFone Motorola Moto G6 Review: Pros and Cons

TracFone Moto G phones have always been popular as exceptional yet affordable, Moto G6 included. Find out everything about the device in this Motorola Moto G6 review.

Moto G6 Review

Motorola Moto G line was considered the best budget phone you can find in the market. Over the years Motorola continues the tradition, even after the company changed management when it was bought by Lenovo.

In 2018, they released Motorola Moto G6. How does this phone fare among the increasingly crowded budget market nowadays?

Let’s take a brief look at Moto G6. Here we have a 5.7-inch Full HD screen, which is fairly big for a smartphone nowadays. Moto G6 runs on 1.8 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 which operates side by side with 3 GB of RAM.

The one TracFone sells comes with 32 GB of internal storage. The retail price for TracFone Moto G6 is $119.99. It’s cheaper than the actual retail price at around $250. Here’s the complete Motorola Moto G6 review:

Design

TracFone Moto G6 outer appearance would impress any buyer on the first sight. It looks premium with aluminum frame and the glass coating on the back cover. The shiny appearance radiates that luxurious look just like on a more expensive phone.

The design of the back cover curves toward the frames. This makes Moto G6 comfortable to hold despite the big display. The aluminum body also adds weight to the phone for a solid grip.

Build quality is exceptional. As it turned out, both front and back of Moto G6 are protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It means both sides of the phone would be resistant to damage and scratches.

Even without a case, Moto G6 would withstand day to day use well. But Moto G6 still needs a case for other reasons. The shiny back attracts fingerprints and grease with ease. It is also slippery.

Gorilla Glass is not the only protection this phone has. TracFone Moto G6 comes with an IP-rated splash resistance body. The phone is water resistant in situations such as light rain. Moto G6 also withstand minor accidents like spilled drinks.

After build quality, let’s talk about the aesthetic. The front side has a 75.4% screen-to-body ratio. Bezels are fairly thin with an edge-to-edge display.

However, the bottom bezel is very thick with Motorola crams a physical button there. The top bezel is also quite thick with the loudspeaker lies there.

Assessing how it looks like on the front part, we find that Moto G looks slightly less elegant and minimal compared to competitors.

In our opinion, it was unnecessary for Motorola to slam their logo at the narrow space between the home button and the screen. The placement makes the bottom edge looks cramped.

Display

Moto G6 Side View

Moving into Moto G6’s display, this phone still impresses us. Coming at 5.7 inches, this size is a sweet spot as it is not too big and not too small.

It’s comfortable to see what’s displayed on the screen, including small texts on apps and websites. Moto G display has an 18:9 ratio which makes it the perfect size for watching movies on widescreen.

Big display is not the only amazing thing Motorola offers on this model. Motorola also arms Moto G6 with excellent display quality.

Moto G6 (XT1925DL) has a Full HD 1080 x 2160 resolution with 424 ppi density. Colors are undeniably sharp and accurate. The display is bright while not straining the eyes when looking at the screen. You can zoom a text and it won’t pixelate.

This puts Motorola among high-end phones in terms of display quality alone. We can say this is the best display you can find on a phone under $120.

The Full HD display also means Moto G6 won’t have any trouble regarding viewing angles. When watching YouTube videos, you can set the video to the highest quality possible (1080p).

The display is also bright enough under outdoor lighting. It’s also smart as it can adjust brightness automatically.

Frankly, it’s hard to find any downside of Moto G6 display. It has exceeded everyone’s expectations. The technology used for the screen is IPS LCD instead of AMOLED.

However, Motorola has given an awesome display already. It just seems ungrateful to expect something more like an AMOLED screen. This is already the best quality relative to the price.

Camera

Moto G6 Back View

Just like its predecessor Moto G5, Moto G6 also comes with dual back camera. The main back camera is 12 MP while the second camera is 5 MP. It’s a downgrade from the previous 13 MP on Moto G5. But Megapixels isn’t everything.

The camera comes with wider aperture at f/1.8. It can capture more lights into the lens, resulting in more details when taking a photo. Pictures with background blur also come out beautiful.

Dynamic range performs really well too. When taking a picture outdoor, the camera can capture the object as well as the blue sky in the background.

Nothing appears washed out. Moto G camera also comes with landmark recognition, which can be handy when traveling.

However, the camera still encounters overexposure in indoor lighting. For example, lamps are too bright and flared. Indoor photography is average. It still can’t compete with high-end phones. For this, we consider camera is not the strong point in this Motorola Moto G6 review.

The front camera has an 8 MP lens. It takes good selfies and there’s also a flash to help in darker lighting. The result is quite good. Sometimes the camera seems like it can’t capture more details, but overall results are good enough to post on social media.

Moto G6 camera is capable to record HD video at 1080p. However, it doesn’t come with any stabilization, so results can come out shaky when there’s motion during recording.

Performance

Moto G6 About

TracFone Moto G series have always been famous for their exceptional performance. For Moto G6, it runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 with a speed of 1.8 GHz.

The phone also has dedicated GPU Adreno 506. As for RAM, TracFone’s Moto G6 comes with 3 GB of RAM.

There’s no doubt about how Moto G6 would perform on everyday tasks. This phone handles almost everything smoothly.

Not only easy tasks, but Moto G6 chipset is also built for heavier operations such as video editing. Gaming is not a problem too with Moto G6, although the phone overheats a little when running heavy games.

Moto G6 is probably the only phone TracFone sells that receives constant Android updates. At first, you’ll get Android 8.0 Oreo as an OS. But then you can upgrade it to the latest version, Android 9.0 Pie.

Moto G6’s Android also comes without any bloatware. Ever since the first generation of Moto G, Motorola equips Moto G phones with stock Android.

Navigating between apps is fast and the RAM isn’t jammed with unnecessary apps. However, the fingerprint reader sometimes is slow to wake the screen up.

One thing to note about Moto G6 is the physical button, which functions as an all-in-one button for Home, App Switch, and Back Button. This button also acts as a fingerprint reader.

New users might need to familiarize themselves with this button. There will be unique gestures you need to learn in order to perform some basic tasks with Moto G6.

Apart from fingerprint, there’s another interesting sensor Moto G6 has. You can see time and notifications simply by waving your hand in front of the display. It’s a pretty cool feature. Moto G6 is hearing aid ready. The loudspeaker also comes with Dolby technology, so sounds come out loud and clear.

Connectivity

Moto G6 is 4G LTE ready, while still supports older bands too. The phone picks up reception really well, and there was hardly any issue related to calling and texting.

Wi-Fi connects fairly quick and there’s also Bluetooth. The USB port is USB Type-C, it is undeniably faster than the older micro USB.

The lack of NFC is the downside of this phone. Moto G6 actually comes with an NFC feature. However, the TracFone version does not have NFC for some reason.

Probably it’s because so they can lower the price. So it means you won’t be able to use mobile payments such as Google Pay with Moto G6.

Storage

Moto G6 Storage

The TracFone version of Moto G6 comes with 32 GB of internal storage. Out of 32 GB, around 22 GB is available for use.

This is still plenty of space to store your pictures, videos, documents, and other files. 22 GB is also more than enough to install apps and big games. We only wish TracFone also sells the 64 GB version.

Expandable storage is also available just in case you use up all the internal storage space. The maximum allowed capacity is 128 GB.

We think this is a reasonable amount, although other competitors offer as big as 400 GB possible external storage capacity. In reality, it would take a long time for someone to use up even an “only” 128 GB of storage space.

Battery

Having a sizable Full HD screen, we expect Moto G6 to also come with a big battery. But it turns out battery capacity is average at 3000 mAh.

It’s quite big, but many phones have reached 4000 mAh these days, especially phones with big displays. But at least, Moto G6 battery can get one full day without recharging.

The best thing about Moto G6 battery is the turbo-charging. It allows users to fully charge the battery in less than an hour. We think it’s a nice compromise for the average capacity.

Wrap-Up

To answer the earlier question about how TracFone Moto G6 (XT1925DL) performs among its competitor, the answer is amazingly well.

Moto G6 excels in so many ways. We are truly satisfied with what this phone offers. Even better, the price won’t break the bank too.

At $119.99, Moto G6 is a steal. It’s one of the best budget phones currently on the market. It has a big Full HD display, reliable processor, pretty big RAM, and tough build quality.

What you won’t get from this phone is a near-professional camera and NFC. So as a final verdict for Motorola Moto G6 review, if the camera and NFC are not your priority, we’d say go for Moto G6. It has everything you need.

Pros:

  • Great build quality
  • Splash resistant
  • Big display
  • All in affordable price
  • Quick charging battery

Cons:

  • TracFone version doesn’t come with NFC
